Having purchased my SD card (scan disk extreme 16 GB micro) brand new from argos to go in my Xperia M4 aqua. I am most disappointed that having transfered apps and other data on to it, suddenly today it has decided to malfunction. Several apps won't work anymore, and it is not recognised when re inserted - any help on this would be much appreciated

Although there is a feature to move apps to an SD card you often find that some of these apps aren't compatible with been transferred and the read and write ability of these apps are missing the code to enable this which is down to the app developers to include this

Thank you for that, but your advice is not a solution to my problem. I think it must be a problem with the SD card slot on the actual handset. So I fear I will have to return this phone

Welcome to the community,

You may also want to try backup the SD card to a PC/Mac and then format it, as this may just be a data issue. You may need an adapter to connect the SD card to your computer however.

Let us know how you get on regardless.

Having tried to use the repair service yesterday without success, this morning the SD card is now being recognised by the phone again - how odd. Makes me even more sure that the slot on the hand set is the problem. The other issue with my videos being blacked out is still the same. Shame on you Sony - I had hoped for more from such a reputable company

Without testing another SD card or formatting the current one, there is no way to tell if this is the SD card slot, based on what you have advised so far, it sounds more related the SD card.

However if you feel otherwise, you are welcome to contact Sony Mobile customer. Use my signature below to find details for your country.

iPhone is a good phone. Highly recommend it

However, for some M4 Aqua is just perfect.

Lollipop is not very stable with memory cards. I do not know why. When I had some apps installed to memory card, it happened from time to time that the phone lost the card unexpectedly. After restart, it was all good again.

But for couple of weeks there are no apps on sdcard and the problem has not appeared since.

The camera output I have directed to sdcard however - this way videos etc are there.

Of course, with many games, this is not the solution you are looking for.

8GB M4 Aqua is not perfect for gaming, is not perfect for anything that requires lots of internal storage.

And since we are talking about it - do backups of your DATA as often as you can (the PCC backup is not super in this sense - it backs up apps (not all) but sometimes misses other data (program bug, i think - it is not related to whether you mark or not the folders)).

My experience is that USB is not reliable for copy-paste - thus I recommend using a good file manager that enables wifi copy.
