Xperia Companion software does not complete software repair

I found a "tossed" Xperia; no SIM or SD card, locked of course. From the position of the camera, etc, it appears to be a Z3.

I discovered Xperia Companion software and have tried numerous times to replace the software, to bring the phone back to life. It is well charged. I have watched the Sony video on the subject.

Companion gets to the stage of getting ready to install the software, then does not. The message reads,

"Software repair error

An error occurres while repairing your device.

Please try again. If the problem persists, please contact Sony support.

2.7.4.0 / Windows 10 Home 64 bit / Win32 / US / "

The phone itself seems to start the boot, then displays a black screen with a logo and ! and words to the effect that the update failed, and make sufe the phone is connected to the computer and try again.
