Since I had my Z I never been able to connect to my home NAS VPN server using built-in L2TP/IPsec profile.

It stays in "connecting state" for a long time then goes back to "disconnected" state

Today, I had the opportunity to test Samsung Salaxy S3 mini.

Using *exactly* the same settings, i've been able to connect straight away.

How can this be possible?

Any tip to make have my Z connect like the S3?

It's not.

Anyway, I don't see the point there: Stamina applies only when screen is *off*:

"STAMINA Mode turned on, the background activities of most applications are reduced when you turn off the screen"

and the failed connection attemps are made with screen on.

I have been able to test with a Galaxy S4 and a LG G3 (both running same android version as Xperia Z: 4.4.2): both ar able to connect!

both other phones are using the same mobile operator and data plan as mine. So it's not a protocol filtering issue.

A member of another forum has been able to connect succesfully with an Xperia Z1 which was still using 4.3 firmware

Then he has updated his phone to latest availlable firmware (4.4.4) and after that has been unable to connect.

I'm guessing there's a flaw introduced by Sony port of android VPN Implementation after kitkat.

Note: I just remembered that, when my phone was still under 4.3, I had a misconfiguration of my router port forwarding.

This explain why I have been unable to connect previously.

Not sure why, you can't get it work. Maybe your pre-share key for security is not correct and etc. But for my XPeria Z works flawlessly.

You may want to check with the ISP of your VPN to see if they require any specific authentication to secure the connection successfully.

You should imagine that double checking PSK correctness has been the first thing I've done. And, in any cases, how could it be possible to make systematic typing errors when using Sony phones and not with other brands?

So far this has been working on 4 different brand *non Sony* phones.

Only *one* Xperia among 5 (2 Z, 2 Z2 and a Z1 compact) has been able to connect, the one which was running android 4.3.

As soon as it hat been upgraded to kitkat, it hasn't been able to connect too.

You haven't be able to check to connect to the same VPN as I do. BTW, It's the VPN server buldled in all Synology NAS devices. And not en exotic one : Openswan, the de facto stanrard on majority of Linux Systems.

I can send you connections settings details in PM, you would be able to make the test by yourself in the same conditions.

You may want to check with the ISP of your VPN to see if they require any specific authentication to secure the connection successfully.

Don't forget that, as specified in my 1st messages, I'm using my own private personal VPN server.

lol My apologies, i miss out that NAS server. But your port forwarding is done and other device seems to work well. That should be a problem, aside from not being able to connect any error prompt?

No prompt on client side but server log contains a lot of (probaly useful) information (for successful connections too) which unfortunately I'm unable to interpret

Hi everybody,

Same exact problem here and it doesn't seem to be an xperia issue. Can connect to my home vpn with every other device except a specific vodafone branded cellphone running kitkat. I can even connect when tethering from this very cellphone with my android tablet. Needless to say I'm using the same credentials on every device, run numerous tests, created new vpn accounts, etc.

The connection is blocked right from the start. It doesn't even reach the server. Now, it has to be some silly permission setting that has been overlooked. Will post here if I find a solution.

The only one I've found: replaced my Xperia Z with a Moto X which connects flawlessly to my NAS VPN.

Neither Sony support or any technicals forums (including this one) has been able to found a better solution unfortunately.

Note: since the flaw has been introduced by a firmware update, you may hope that the upcoming announced Lollipop release will have this fixed.

I too can connect seamlessly with a Moto G.

It's definitely a firmware issue. Also, PPTP seems to work, IPSec doesn't.

We got a test account from another user with this issue and have found the cause of this. It will be fixed in an upcoming software update.

How can it be possible, that one would buy a Sony supposed to be smartphone, and cant even connect to a L2tp/IpSec VPN for work purposes.

I have a Xperia Z1 and i cant connect to any vpn instance, going from connecting ... Disconnect !
Tried with several other phones with different OS Being common that Android 5.1.1 all of them work from samsung till the funky unbranded chinese phones. Nowadays I have a forsaken Iphone 5 that works a Ipsec tunnel even in china flawelessly and I am doomed to use 2 phones because the outmost incompetence of Sony development team !!
Being more outrageous the amount of time already passed since first post until today .... with the issue still to be solved.

It is clear to everyone in the world that Sony is no longer the company that used to be and nowadays a punny player in the tech market.

My outmost compliments to the useless support team staff that can only reply that some day ... maybe when the phone will already be a dinossaur, that extraordinary bug fix will happen .... What a miserable company that robbed me from my hard working money, with this piece of flawed junk that is an xperia phone. Sony should go back to produce dinassaur stereo devices and old analogical radios and tv s ...

Just the same my phone xperia z5 I bought last week ago eventually when I upload vpn is connected so when I turn off the same day does not connected. How come this phone is quality is bad! I was very repent and dismayed my money to pruchase thisthis phone I thought is a good quality.
