I solved the same issue with this procedure:

In apps-->Camera i removed the permission on the storage, cleared the cache, deactivated the app and forced to stop.

Renamed the folder DCIM to DCIM_bak. (I used Filemanager+)

Then re-activated the camera app again, started it and give the permission on the storage.

It should create a new folder with the name DCIM.

Tested: OK

Copied all items from DCIM_bak to the new DCIM.

That's all.

Hi Hl78, welcome to the community!

Try clearing the data for camera if clearing the cache didn't work then test the camera again. If this doesn't resolve the issue I advise booting your phone in to Safe Mode to see whether you experience the issue then.

To boot your phone in safe mode press the power key until the Power Off message appears > hold your finger on Power
Off for 2-3 seconds until 'Reboot to safe mode?' appears > tap OK. To exit safe mode reboot the phone normally.

I know that whenever I have had the camera operation failed message it is because I had another app in the background that had been using the camera function. Example: used a slow motion golf swing camera app that allows you to slow down and draw lines etc to improve your swing.

I installed the Google Cam app, when i open it it worked fine, and for some reason the default app worked as well, maybe some files were lost and the google cam app reinstalled those files.

try that

sorry to hear that, have you tried reseting your phone? factory reset..

from debugging i noticed that it was a permission issue.. that's why google cam app worked for me because it did a reset to the permission.

It also might be an app that you installed recently that changed the permission on the Cam app.

Yeah, sorry about that . I meant "take back my words", not "take back the phone." I should've been clearer.

A factory reset fixed the issue. It caused alot of trouble, but it was worth it to get the Xperia camera back. Next time I'll be sure to look at the permissions.

I'm fairly confident that this was caused by some very out of date software that I was playing with. Have turned off that fuction and everything is smooth sailing now.
