ICD-PX470 ic recorder stereo mini jack MIC question

I've just purchased ICD-PX470 ic recorder. The specifications states it has a stereo microphone input mini jack. The jack only seems to work with mono microphones and never creates a stereo signal. I've used a preparatory stero lapel mic with a mini jack stereo plug, but this also fails to record anything.

Q can someone confirm that this recorder does actually have a stereo input from the microphone jack socket and what type of plug/ stero mic should be used?

Other than configuring the input for external mic, there appears to be no other options. I'm using the medium Mp3 setting to record, not the mono lowest option.
