IEEE 1394 (iLink Firewire) to Desktop PC

Hi guys.

I wondered if it is possible to connect my K115B to a Windows 98 desktop via FireWire.

I need to buy a FireWire card but do you have any suggestions as to what brand to use and the average cost? I have one free PCI socket to install the desktop card in. If I can avoid it I want to use the iLink socket integrated in my VAIO PC rather than get a PCMCIA CardBus adapter.

Anybody have any ideas?

According to iPodlounge, the Adaptec range is the best for Firewire.

Pay no more than £30.

Thanks Kee-Lo. The reason I ask is because I simply can't be bothered to get up off my fat ar*e to transfer files from the laptop to the desktop via a USB stick - too much like hard work LOL.

I did think about Ethernet as another solution, but FireWire I think is generally faster - hopefully Windows 98 will not cause a big bottleneck...

LOL If I can't get it to work, then expect a barage of questions!

You could kill two birds with one stone James and have a USB upgrade
Belkin USB2.0 and FireWire PCI

Thanks for the link - but Windows 98 does not support USB 2.0 so i'd have [BS] USB 1.1 ports instead - and I already have an Opti 82C861 FireCard for USB 1.1 in the desktop.

Thanks anyway. FireWire seems to be the way to go - assisting me to become more idle!:smileylaugh:

Do you know of anywhere (legal of course) that provides USB 2.0 drivers for 9X? It is the reason that I use all USB stuff on the laptop instead (apart from the fact that it is 2000% quicker). I seem to remember MS washing their hands of USB 2.0 in Win9X altogether.

Firewire is far better than USB2 for use with external drives. It places a lot less load on the processor than USB2 and it is generally more reliable.

There is not much of a speed difference either (Unless you are lucky enough to have Firewire 800 which is nearly twice the speed of USB2)

I agree Rob, Firewire 800 seems to be a Mac thing still though....

Thanks again - LOL this is going on my ever expanding xmas list! It is ideal - with the aluminium case and all for travelling weekly... ...and 350GB of disk space - I am going to ask for it for xmas and hope santa brings it!:smileylaugh:
