Hi there

Can you confirm that you are using the BBC iPlayer application and YouTube application (as in going to SEN > Applications) and NOT going to either via the web-browser?

Hi there

Two things id recommend you do:

Ensure that you have the latest firmware installed

Perform a factory reset of the TV

In most cases this should fix any issues with errors messages with SEN apps.

Try that and see how things go.

Cheers

Can you provide more information? Are you going to a specific website/s that 'crash' the TVs web browser - if so which ones - are they graphic intensive? Or is it every website (ie google.co.uk).

I am using the youtube app in sen apps. In fact, the video plays, but the browser error is printed in a dark layer over the screen, make the video impossible to watch (and if you click on OK when the error is printed, it quits the app). This happens whetever the video is.

This happens when I use the youtube app, when I try to cast the screen from youtube on my xperia phone and when I try to play a youtube video on the TV from a registered computer. This doesn't happen if I play youtube via flipps app on my phone (through DLNA) for example. Other apps like opera movies work fine, so this is definitely something in the youtube app itself.

I tried to do a factory reset again, and remove the power plug for about 1 min after the reset to be sure the TV does a cold restart, but that doesn't help.

Hi there

I think your going to have to contact Sony support on this one to be honest. I have the W807a TV (same TV, just silver frame) and do not experience this problem. Also, if it was wide spread, more people would have complained, therefore at this moment, its isolated to your TV.

Sony Support should be able to assist you on this. Details : HERE

Given I still haven't heard further from Sony about this, I have tried to contact Sony by phone, but it seems it's quite difficult.

I must admit it's annoying because if I need to get a replacement unit from the vendor, I need to do that fast enough. Also, it's not garanteed the problem won't re-occur with a new unit.

I tried to update the internet content, but that doesn't solve the issue either. It's quite annoying as the video is playing just fine, but is impossible to watch.

It gives this, you can see the video is playing in the background (I selected the first video available which is something in the mountains).

So I tested a few more things.

First I tried to make the update on a memory stick, for which the TV told me there was no update on the stick (obviously as it's already on the TV).

Then I did _again_ a factory reset, then removed the power plug for 2 min. Reconfigured everything. Did remove the power plug again for 2 min. I started the TV, then selected "update network content", then tried youtube app.

Then I tried to remove the AstonCrypt cam from the the TV and use youtube app.

None of this helped 😞

While I was at it, I looked at my firewall log for the traffic from the TV when using youtube app, and it seems it gets the data from a cache at my ISP. While I doubt this is causing the issue, perhaps I should try to avoid using this cache.

Dec 12 12:09:50.865563 rule 105/(match) pass in on em0: 172.20.0.72.53118 > 194.78.0.142.80: S 2829523358:2829523358(0) win 5840 <mss 1460,sackOK,timestamp 4437 0> (DF)

142.0.78.194.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer 142.0-78-194.cache.googlevideo.com.

inetnum: 194.78.0.0 - 194.78.0.255

descr: Belgacom ISP SA/NV

Dec 12 12:09:50.650403 rule 106/(match) pass in on em0: 172.20.0.72.47629 > 194.78.99.119.443: S 516025482:516025482(0) win 5840 <mss 1460,sackOK,timestamp 4415 0> (DF)

inetnum: 194.78.99.0 - 194.78.99.255
netname: GoogleCluster
descr: Google Video Cache

mnt-by: SKYNETBE-MNT

So I tested by redirecting all traffic through a TOR proxy in another country, and it's the same.

I reconfigured the network on the TV to run though an http proxy. There are some interesting logs:

1418387576.696 231 172.20.0.72 TCP_MISS/200 455 GET http://xml.opera.com/update/sdk/? - HIER_DIRECT/185.26.182.117 text/xml
1418387576.731 2331 172.20.0.72 TCP_MISS/200 211056 CONNECT www.youtube.com:443 - HIER_DIRECT/194.78.0.39 -
1418387576.901 4250 172.20.0.72 TCP_MISS/200 48094 CONNECT www.youtube.com:443 - HIER_DIRECT/194.78.0.39 -
1418387577.051 28 172.20.0.72 TCP_MISS/200 2430 GET http://xml.opera.com/spoof/sdk/? - HIER_DIRECT/185.26.182.117 text/xml
1418387577.080 56 172.20.0.72 TCP_MISS/302 701 GET http://xml.opera.com/userjs/sdk/? - HIER_DIRECT/185.26.182.117 text/html
1418387577.923 726 172.20.0.72 TCP_MISS/200 54273 GET http://get.geo.opera.com/res/servicefiles/browserjsfiles/sdk/browserjs-LinuxSDK-6101-20140429.js - HIER_DIRECT/37.228.108.142 appl$
cation/x-javascript

So it appears the youtube app uses opera browser in its core. The following url is a set of patches opera uses to "correct" some sites and get "good" behavior. ( explained at http://www.opera.com/docs/browserjs/ )

http://get.geo.opera.com/res/servicefiles/browserjsfiles/sdk/browserjs-LinuxSDK-6101-20140429.js

And this is the last file got by the TV besides youtube related URLs. And this is a js file, which is meant to be executed by the browser itself.

At last, I found out....... It works now....

Here is the technical explanation for those interested:

I have a DNS cache on my network, it is configured to resolve some advertising domain names to an internal server which serves nothing but a blank page.

At some point, the TV browser asks for ad.doubleclick.net on port 443. This resolves to my internal server (172.20.0.254):

1418387596.667 5591 172.20.0.72 TCP_MISS/200 4257 CONNECT ad.doubleclick.net:443 - HIER_DIRECT/172.20.0.254 -

Given it's port 443, when the browser connects, it gets an invalid certificate when trying to fetch the ads and crashes.

It might be something else along that way, but the result is there, when I enable the connection to doubleclick, youtube app works.

I would still consider this as a bug as it's not supposed to crash for such a thing. Imagine if doubleclick was not working, it would also prevent youtube app to work.
