The answer is simply: to cut te costs.
This is why they offer inferior internals while asking for it more than competition at the same time. By doing this they have highest margin profit in each single device in Android world. Seems they are greedy?
This is also why their best and biggest sensors will be first used in Xiaomi / Hujawei next year and sony will deliver its own older inferior technology: smaller sensor size for sure.
Stacked sensor size? Who prohibited them from producing newer better, bigger sensor with stacked memory??? Same applies to who prohibited them from including bigger battery and more RAM/ROM. Same obvious question. Same reason.
They have their best tech for competition while Xperia is using older and worse solutions. Among the others, one of the reason they are where they are.
If you want best camera, best battery and best internals nawadays you have to go for chinese brand and its flagship model.
Agree on DxOMark and I never consider their opinion, DxO is just another paid service and useless.
Its not that xperia is very bad, but definitely worse when it comes to hardware used and its advancement from competition. However, this is only sony choice and not limitation. They are exactly where they want to be.
p.s. yeah, there is no night mode, no 21:9 in main camera but also no many other features.
