HDR-CX550 crashes on HD Record, but not STD record. Codec processor death?

Had from new (8 years ago), awesome, use a lot every week, spot on.

But for no reason whatsoever, it started freezing when the record button is pressed for HD recording (all modes) (STBY indicator continuously flashes for about 15 seconds, then goes out - can't even turn the camera off during or afterwards, have to pull the power).
After a couple of weeks of playing, discovered it works when recording mode is switched to STD (i.e. 480p Mpeg).

Tried the following:

  • Formatting the internal memory using camera and PC via USB
  • Using the optional SD card away from internal mem (same issue)
  • using Battery/mains
  • Reseting whole camera
  • Leaving power off for days
  • Using PC to analyse internal flash mem for errors (clean as a whistle)
  • Resetting timeline data (seems to write 400MB of files to the internal ram no problem).

My only conclusion is either the codec software on the camera is bust, or the codec processor on the camera is bust. I originally thought the controller for the flash memory (internal RAM) was bust, as a speed test using PC shows it being slower than the Class 10 SD Card (3-5MB/s write, 19MB/s read), but it still writes fine to it on STD and from PC.

Anyone any ideas? I tried to find a way to update the firmware but there are no instructions (or files to be found) about this.

Cheers
Mark
