Repair centre charges for PRS-600. More than a new reader?

My PRS-600, which was purchased in September 2009 and stored and carried in the official Sony cover with a light,  suddenly showed black vertical lines and a blank space on the screen.  No, it hasn't been dropped!

I sent it to the repair centre in Bridgend and, after paying £28.08, they inspected it and sent me a quote for the repair.  This was for £188.20!

I rang and asked why it was so expensive and what they thought could have caused the problem in the first place.  I wasn't allowed to talk to an engineer and was told that the e-ink had bled into the screen; " it must have been dropped".  So, no advice on preventing a possible future occurrence should I purchase another Sony reader.  The cost is so high because they have to buy in parts in advance when a product is launched, whatever that means.

I can buy a new PRS-650 for £200 but my leather cover with a light cannot be used with it, neither can my mains charger, so this will be a further £90 or so.

I realise that my whinge is not going to change anything but I wondered if anyone else has had similar  experiences

If anyone wishes to buy a second hand leather cover and mains charger please (in excellent condition) let me know!

I think the product is great, the customer service is lousy and I am probably going to buy a Kindle as a replacement.

Sadly, the answer is yes.

Only the situation is improving somewhat of late, I believe.
