I am searching for a way to make the subject mentioned connection.

I could buy a vga to s-video/rca cable, but I have heared that it doesn't always work, so I might have to buy some kind of a signal converter instead (?)

Yes, you will need a VGA to Composite Video/S-Video signal converter box.

You will find several different models at Amazon from £12 to £50.
