Diagonal lines on LCD Display

Ever since I bought my Vaio VGN-FZ11S last August, I have noticed that there are very faint diagonal lines running from top left to bottom right of the screen (and the whole of the screen). I have always thought it was normal and possibly the way the screens are manufactured, however reading on another forum I spotted someone describing a similar issue and they were told it was a fault.

Can anyone tell me whether it is a fault. As I said, these lines are very very faint and only appear on certain colours such as white, cream and grey. It gives it a sort of textured look.

If it has to go back for repair, it'll be the third time! I'm a little disappointed, I've never had any problems with any Sony product until my laptop.

I am really considering making the switch from PCs to Macs permanently. I got a Mac 5 years ago, never had a single problem and have never had to recover the hard drive or anything.

Hi Izak,

Are you using the latest nVidia driver? There is an update to nVidia Video Driver 7.15.11.128 available on the download page for your model.

I would try a driver update before looking for more sinister problems. It may be worth trying an external monitor to see if the same lines show up.

As a last resort, contact Sony.

Thanks for your reply.

The nVIDIA drivers are v7.15.11.0128. I updated them only a couple of weeks ago when my computer returned from repair.

I have plugged my HDTV into the laptop with a HDMI cable and there are no diagonal lines on the HDTV.

The diagonal lines aren't moving or anything (they aren't noise) but when I turn the screen to some light, it doesn't look totally smooth, but I always thought this was what they looked like. I've never had a laptop before so I've always considered it normal until I saw this post on another forum.

If it has to be fixed, would I have to send it off for repair again? Is there no way Sony could send someone out to just replace the screen?

Phoned Sony on Monday regarding the problem and the guy on the phone asked me to e-mail a screenshot (using the Print-Screen button), I explained that this wouldn't show the lines as they don't appear on an external monitor. He asked me to send the screenshot anyway and I said I would try and take a photo of the screen with my digital camera. He then said once he received the e-mail, he would phone me back.

I took a screenshot with the print-screen button and then tried to take one with my digital camera but it didn't work, every picture make the screen look really distorted and didn't show up the lines at all.

I sent the e-mail anyway along with the screenshot and explained I couldn't take a photo with my camera. It is now Wednesday evening and I am still waiting for him to phone back!!!

I know the e-mail went and I didn't have it 'bounce-back' so I've no idea what is happening.

Someone has suggested I take the laptop to a Sony Centre (the nearest to me being at the Trafford Centre) as I can show them what is the problem and they can see it for themselves without the worry of sending it for repair and receiving it back with a bill as there was no problem fixed.
