IF YOU HAVE DVD/CD DRIVE PROBLEMS - READ THIS>

Several members seem to have problems with their CD/DVD drives at the moment. As far as I know, there is no magic solution but you could try some or all of the following: -

1. See if there is an updated driver or updated firmware for your drive at Vaio-Link. Some Sony drives are re-badged from other manufacturers and you may have to search for updated downloads. For example, if you have a Sony DW-D56A drive, you can get a firmware download from HERE (Use PFS2). Many other drives are also supported on this site.

2. Use System Restore to return your Vaio to the configuration when it was last working normally.
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> System Restore - choose a restore date before you had the problem.

3. Look in Device Manager to see if there are any errors against your DVD/CD-ROM drive.
Start -> Right-Click My Computer -> Properties -> Hardware -> Device Manager - expand DVD/CD-ROM Drives and check the status. If there is an Error Code or a yellow triangle with a ! or ? come back here with the number and we may be able to help.

4. If there is no error and the drive is reported as working normally, try Uninstalling the drive by right-clicking on it in Device Manager and choosing Uninstall. Re-booting your Vaio will reinstall the drivers.

5. Try some different software to read/write your discs and see if that works. Also try a different brand of discs - Sony, TDK and Verbatim seem favourites.

6. Try a liquid lens cleaner on the lens and polish with a microfibre cloth ? this can sometimes help.

7. If your drive works with either CDs or DVDs only make sure the ribbon cable is not preventing the reader head from moving freely - check that the laser head in the drive can move freely for the whole range of its travel. The disc information is held on the outside tracks for DVDs and the inner tracks for CDs.

8. Last resort is to perform a full C:\ Drive System Recovery from your Recovery Discs. Make sure you back up all your Data as the contents of C:\ will be lost and your Vaio returned to the factory configuration.

If none of these work, you may have a hardware problem and you need to contact Vaio-Link. There is no point contacting them until you have carried out a Drive C:\ Recovery as this is the first thing they will ask you to do.

Hi mrbrown18

Welcome to Club vaio,

There is a fix for XP provided by Microsoft , see below, but it's been used to fix the same problem on Vista..

It would be wise to back up your registry first, here is a GUIDE

Manual steps to delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values that can cause CD access problems
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To manually delete the UpperFilters and LowerFilters registry values, follow these steps:
1.Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
2.Locate the UpperFilters value under the following key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
3.On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
4.Locate the LowerFilters value under the same key in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
5.On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click OK.
6.Quit Registry Editor.
NOTE: After you remove the Upperfilters value and the Lowerfilters value, if you notice lost functionality in a particular program, such as CD recording software, you may need to reinstall that software. If the problem recurs, consult with the software vendor for assistance.

7.Restart your computer.

or

alternatively save the CD Gone registry fix (attached below) to your hard drive and then double click to run..

I have DW D56A and I am only in one thing sure. Windows XP SP3

I am sick and tired of the Sony. Men, I payed this bullshit from Sony 1500 EUR, and what I get, two times on service, installed software is bullshit, full of the advertisning junk which you are not able to use if you don't purchase, keybord buttons for caps look don't work, really in general one peace of the shit.

So here is my solution. Next time when I buy new laptop, will buy any laptop but not Sony, even will never ever buy any product anymore from Sony. I was destroyed least six or seven CD's until I finally found out that I cannot burn CD becouase Sony error? He burned my CD, just he burned empty CD, so he was destroying them, so I am not able to use them anymore, and I get blank CD? Probably it is same thing with DVD.

I see many people here have the same issue, so I ask my self is it this connected with Windows XP SP3. I didn't burned CD or DVD long time, so it is possible that my CD/DVD Recorder don't work in months?

Who knows, just to Sony support I will give one nice 0 (zero), for quality one nice 0 (zero), price/quality -10 (minus 10) so in general I payed to Sony big money and I get expensive "Dell", I will not do that second time.

WHY NOBODY FROM SONY SEND US WARNINGS VIA EMAIL ABOUT THIS, SO PEOPLE WILL NOT LOSE THEIRS MONEY AND TIME ON THIS? Yeah, bad publicity, so keep quite, who cares those fulls who both our (Sony) products with mayor errors?

Where is fix or something else for this? In my update everything is OK, just my CD/DVD don't work, and support don't care about this? So thousands of theirs customers have identical errors, who cares? How can they get licence to sell this kind of the bullshit in EU?

I would be grateful if anyone could help with my problamatic DVD drive. I have tried most of the suggestions in the first post; reinstalled drivers, recovery, etc. with no luck

It is a Matshit UJ-850S in a Vaio VGN AR21M with Windows XP sp3. Once upon a time it worked okay but now the drive reads CDs and DVDs fine but will not write DVDs. The Roxio DigitalMedia SE software posts the following error:

Sense: 04 ASC: 03 ASCQ: 00 (Command 2A)
-------------------------------------------------------
px.dll: 4.10.28.500
pxafs.dll: 4.10.28.500
pxdrv.dll: 1.2.31.0
pxmas.dll: 4.10.28.500
pxsfs.dll: 4.10.28.500
pxwave.dll: 4.10.28.500
pxwma.dll: 1.0.0.3

When I close the Roxio software 3 errors pop up; first stating that memory could not be written, second memory could not be read and third a runtime error. All relate to mediahub.exe.

I have tried alternative software (Burn Aware Free) and it stops writing the DVD at the same point (about 3MB into the write).

Please help as this is driving me mad! Thanks for any help in advance.
