Too true... and it would be money well spent by Sony. Oh, maybe they should just give you a new machine annually.

Kingslee - The problem is the processor which can run at 3.06GHz when it needs to. Now really give this processor a real stack load of work- say 90 -100% of max, this thing is really flying then and so it generates heat. It also has a higher voltage than say a Pentium M, and so work + voltage = heat.

So to the second part of the problem ( which I think Seb mentions above). This processor was designed for a desktop where there is enough space to glue a whacking great heat sink and integral fan to the top of it. In a laptop there just isn't the room and so they make a plan to stop it melting, and that is to put a high air flow fan in to keep control of the heat produced.

I think it is a processor plus model/design problem, but I prefer to have a laptop which can really work when I need it to. My 1.6GHz desktop drives me crazy while it thinks....I call it daft bast***!!!

It is really a personal choice. I have heaps of lovely photos on mine and I just love the X-black screen, so for me a slight whir of the fan is worth the screen benefit...
