I had problems with other mades of cameras (cannon EOS 30D) so I had a go with my card reader connected to USB "A" and it work OK ! so if your camera is not detected give it a go.I can now take with me , on safari an store my photos with out a P.C. hopfully
Whele all camera's that don't need a driver to connect toWindows XP should work. This because the VGL-ap1 is an USB OTG (on the go) device. This is an extension on the original USB standard that allows one machine to act as client and another as usb server without the need for a PC. Problem is that it is USB 1.1 and so it is slow (especilally with an 8mp am and when using Raw (16.7 MB) or Tiff (23 MB) photo's a piece...
Some camera's have to be set to the Pictbridge mode, some to the standard others to PTP mode. If this is not in the camera manual you may have to do some experimenting which mode to use.
I recommend the use of a cardreader, this way you don't have to open and close the often flimsy rubber or plastic doors that cover the USB connector.
Here is what I did :
I bought an Apacer Share Steno, kind of Sony photo Vault, which is an empty box in which you can place a 2.5 inch harddisk. It also uses OTG and even has a small lcd screen and a couple of buttons that makes it possible to browse the device, use one button copy, or copy selected files back and front. The whole package did cost me 60 euro's.... At home it is connected to the PC and 2/3 of the HD is used as an extra backupdevice (next to two internal HD and DVD burner)
There are also other brands like Eson, Belkin, Sony ofcourse etc. Some even have nice screesn build in but than the price can be as high as 600 euro's. Most of them are USB 2.x and so capable of a max of 480 Mbits or 60 MByte per second transfer speed (there is no card yet that comes close, most HD disk are much slower than this).

Bought a Dazzle compact flash reader USB 2 and took about 6mins to download 128mb (41 photos) to my VP. Then downloaded direct to my PC from the date file on the photo viewer.
It works,great.:smileylaugh:
