Will Only Play Certain DVD's

I have a Sony Vaio PCG-GRT815E with Windows XP Home and SP 1 (SP 2 will be loaded when I get internet access back at home at the end of the month).

My DVD-RW (DW-U50A) will read CD's, Write CD's.

However it will only read DVD's with content on both sides, e.g. It will play Only Fools and Horses Series three where you have to turn over the disc for extra episodes. But will not play Series one where all the episodes are on one side.

Likewise it will not read DVD software discs such a Visual Studio.

I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the CD Drive. I've even reset drive C to factory settings using the Sony disc (Hence SP 1 and not SP 2 as I had before).

Nothing appears to work

Have you tried the DW-U50A firmware update available on Vaio-Link?

This is reportedly for ¿ ¿Added support for readability of a DVD+R Dual Layer Single session Finalized disc¿. But, you never know, it may also solve other problems.
