at the top of the screen on my sony c3 a star Is that it should appear? This came a few days after updating my android

Hi Xavizamora, welcome to the community!

This star icon at the top of your screen means your handset is set to priority mode, when this setting is activated it only allows certain notifications to come through. If you press the volume up key it lets you choose between Silent, Priority & Sound. In Settings > Sound & notification > Interruptions - here you can choose which notifications you would like to receive when your phone is set to Priority .
