My Xperia tablet screen has developed a tendancy to flicker, sometimes rapidly, when I typing on the keyboard.Can this be easily fixed?

Few things to try

1. boot on safe mode

2. if 1. doesn't work then repair it with PCC

3. if neither 1 nor 2 work then contact your local Xperia Care

Others reported flicker when using bluetooth keyboards following system updates to android 4.2 and 4.3. The 4.4 upgrades have reportedly fixed this. What version are you on? Note that 4.4 adds new restrictions on 3rd party apps writing to SD cards, except to each app's own folder created by its installation process.
