OK - I did the full software repair / update (which - by the way everyone, completely wipes your phone, so it takes some time to set everything back up). I thought it helped, but it did not - so unless other people have success with this route, I suggest you not do it because it is a lot of work/time.
For about one day the phone seemed pretty stable and I thought the problem had gone away. Sadly, though, it has not. It is back in full force.
I am trying various other things such as rebooting and killing background tasks to see if I can detect a pattern as to what helps and what does not.
But at the moment, the phone is a real pain (as mentioned before) because things like e-mail threads refresh randomly (might happen every 5 seconds, or might go 2 minutes with no problem). This takes me to the top of the page. Same for web pages. Likewise, things like voice-to-text randomly exit mid-speaking due, I think, to the same problem. It seems to affect the whole phone, making it generally hard to use and very frustrating.
I have the same apps and the same Android version on my backup phone (nexus 5) and tablet (nexus 9) and don't experience this problem.
Sony - help - I love this phone but right now it is tremendously annoying. I will have to buy a new (different) one if I can't find a solution. And it was not cheap (just got it two months ago) 😞
