com.android.phone stopped after oreo update

Greetings,

Days after I received the Xperia XZ Premium (G8141), the Oreo update was released for it. Ever since then, the moment that any application install/update/uninstall is complete, as soon as it's finished, com.android.phone will stop until relaunched, meaning no service at all, no signal, no network communication..

"Unfortunately, the process com.android.phone has stopped."

In attempt to resolve this issue, I have removed the SIM card and gone into safe mode to clear all data (including cache) for the following applications:

Update service,
Package installer,

PacProcessor,

Package Access Helper,

fota update service,

ConfigUpdater,

Google Services Framework,

Phone,

Phone Services,

Phone and Messaging Storage,

Call Management,

Smart call handling,

Call Log Backup/Restore,

Calling name presentation provider,

SIM Toolkit,

SIM Detection,

SIM lock,

com.android.carrierconfig,

com.qualcomm.qti.telephonyservice,

com.qualcomm.qti.simsettings,

com.sonymobile.rcs.startup,

com.sonymobile.fota.service,

com.sonymobile.anondata,

com.quicinc.cne.CNEService.CNEServiceApp,

Please provide a solution for this issue, as I am highly reliant on my Xperia for a phone.

Anybody else having this issue or any luck eliminating it?

I found the visual voicemail...turned it off but I have no Play Store updates available so not sure if it will work.

Here is what I did and how to find the visual voicemail.

Go to settings > Apps & Notifications > App info > Phone > select "Force Stop > then select Storage > then Clear Cache > then Clear Data. Then get out of settings and open phone app > top right corner select three dots > settings > calls > Voicemail > there is the Visual Voicemail toggle....turn it off > then reboot. I was able to do a Play Store update and the error message is gone. Follow my steps to make it work for you.

Hi @bradx, welcome to the community. I am sorry to hear about this Slightly_frowning_Face

Because this happened after an update, you may wish to re-install the update. To do this, I recommend you perform a software repair using Xperia Companion.

Since oreo is a bit like win vista/8 in the sense that its absolute garbage that should never have been created as it causes more issues than its worth, id suggest you revert back to nougat where everything worked fine

I have certainly tried performing a software repair through the companion.

I have certainly narrowed down that it is precisely Phone and Phone Services that are crashing, and thanks to StanleyKubrick, now I know it was Visual Voicemail that was causing them to crash.

I don't have Calls > Voicemail under settings in the phone app like someone else mentioned so not sure how to get his error to go away.

First of all...are you using the default dialer that comes with the phone, or are you using a third party dialer/skin on top of it? You need to use the default built in dialer to access this setting.

Second of all...are you sure you are following the instructions correctly? Unless you are using a third party dialer I don't see how yours could be any different than all the others???

Yes, I'm running the default built in dialer that came with my G8142 on Android 8.0.0. The language was set to Chinese when first setting up the device so it must be from that region. Anyway finally found where to turn off visual voicemail and the error went away as others have mentioned. Here's where I found the setting:

Phone App > ... > Settings > Calling Accounts > Tap CARD 1 > Voicemail > Turn off Visual Voicemail

OK I see that the dual SIM version is a little different than the single SIM version...which is what I have. Glad to hear that your issue is fixed.
