Phone unlocks in pockets and bags easily and the widgets from the swipe menu such as camera, phone and flashlight for example have been engaged.
Is there anyway to remove functionality once the button has been pressed. Or can the amount of time to press the button for unlock be changed? The prominence of the power key seems to be an issue.

You should not get the phone unlocked from power key while in pocket, it can be the "Tap to wake" option that is causing this. Go to Settings -> Display -> Turn off "Tap to wake up" at the bottom, and test if it still happens.
