Xperia Z3+ Android N Over-heating and Processor Perfomance Questions

Hi, I currently own a Xperia Z3 and I wanted to update to a Z3+ but I have read a lot of bad things about it's infamous Snapdragon 810 regarding over-heating, and I also read that as a fix for that problem Sony down-clocked the processor. Is this true? If it is... Is a temporal fix or a permanent?

Also, please, can you tell me how is the perfomance with this update? I mostly use my phone to see very very heavy video in 1080p, my Z3 has a bit of problem running them, and I also have a phone with a Helio X20 processor, and it can run them smoothly with software, but you can say that has more processing power than it needs to run that videos, so I was wondering if the Z3+ can play very heavy MKV subtitled videos without any problem, Im ok using any video player as long as it works (original, MX Player or VLC with full acceleration activated).

So... summarizing:

Hows the perfomance with this update? Hows the Over-heating issue? Hows the battery drain? Do you consider it worth an update from the Xperia Z3?

Hi, I dont think it worth the upgrade if you already have a Z3 but im very confident that you wont have any problems regarding playback of heavy mkvs. My mom owns one and i have a MotoX2014 with SD801. The overheating issue is not anymore a problem to the touch with common use, but is very noticeable when using the camera recording at 4K, or 1080P 60 fps. Recording at 1080p 30 fps is fine. Also i encountered throttling while using Google Earth in 3D cities when the processor gets over 65°c and my Moto X2 doesnt have this problem. I could try to play some 1080 if you can send me the file or let me know the bitrate of the mkv so i could test if it has problems. I played normal mkvs 1080 30 and it works good. Also gopro unedited footage at 1080p60 fps and no problems.

Thank you very much for your reply. For example, this type video for example can't be played:

Format: Matroska

Format version:Version 4 / Version 2
Overall bit rate : 3 057 Kbps

Video Format : HEVC
Format profile : Main 10@L5@Main
Width : 1 920 pixels
Height : 1 080 pixels
Frame rate mode : Constant
Frame rate : 23.976 fps
Color space : YUV
Chroma subsampling : 4:2:0
Bit depth : 10 bits

Audio Format : FLAC
Codec ID : A_FLAC
Bit rate mode : Variable
Channel(s) : 2 channels
Sampling rate : 48.0 KHz
Bit depth : 16 bits
Title : FLAC

Also, somehow even some H.264 AVC with AC3 audio (if the audio was AAC or FLAC it didn't have a problem) failed to play.

Also, My phone with Helio X20 can't play it with hardware, but if I activate the software decoder then it can, but in my Xperia Z3 I can't play it even if I activate the SW decoder. I have lots of this type of video, so it's very important for me to know if it can play it, I don't care if it gets a bit hot (obviously not dangeroulsy hot) because my phone with the Helio X20 gets reasonably hot when playing videos with SW.

And I made a mistake, I owned one, so I no longer have it (And I really regret selling it Crying_Face ) So I want to buy it again or expend a bit more for the Z3+ or I'm also considering the Xperia X. Thanks for your help.

Hello @hudaif and welcome to the community!

Refreshing your phone's software every while would improve your phone's performance and clear such issues related to operating system aging. I'd suggest that you do a backup using Xperia Companion (but don't backup apps or settings) followed by asoftware repair using Xperia Companion. This will do a clean installation of the latest firmware and will also wipe your internal memory. Follow the steps given in the blue link, do not connect your phone until prompted to press volume down while plugging USB cable.
