Initially I used my Z3 without SD card. Everything word fine: album AND the foto widget which allows to browse through taken pictures.
After
- installing an SD card,
- changing the location for newly taken pictures to SD card
- AND moving some pictures to other directories -
- AND creating a number of .nomedia files on these directories to make these pictures not appear in the album nor in the foto widget,
the foto widget shows a broken image icon for ALL pictures taken until this change. All new pictures display fine in the widget and the album app.
I delete the album cache and data file (in settings -- all apps -- album).
This didn't change anything (so far).
How can I force the album app/widget to recreate it's database and preview/thumbnails??
Thanks a lot.

Solved! Go to Solution.
Working solution for was the following:
Stopped the MediaStorage App
Settings > Apps > All > Media Storage (DE: Medienspeicher) "App Info" > Stopp App
Deleted data of the MediaStorage App
Settings > Apps > All > Media Storage (DE: Medienspeicher) "App Info" > Clear Data
Restarted App (via MyPhoneExplorer) or by restarting the phone.
The process appears as "android.process.media" in the android process list (not sure, I guess)
To provide processing power turn of stamina mode or add "MediaStorage" to the exception list of background apps runing even in stamania mode.
>a) how long could it take to recreate database and thumbnails? The main picture directory (DCIM on the SD card) contains >almost 1000 pictures).
A: It does __NOT__ take very long. For my about 1000+ photos and some videos is was a matter of minutes to see that the foto widget started display pictures properly and to see the album recovers very quickly. If you reach a corner of the album or foto widget pictures yet not recovered, the picture appears quite quickly.
>b) Where should the .thumbnails directory reside? Should it -- after switiching to the SD -- be in /storage/sdcard1/DCIM or still >in /storage/sdcard0/DCIM as it was before the installation of the SD card?
A: It seems that the .thumbnails directory always resides on the internal memory (i.e. /storage/sdcard0/DCIM). This is the case for my phone at least.
It also seems that the files .thumbnails are used ONLY for the foto widget NOT for the album app. Could anybody confirm this?

Stop the MediaStorage process, clear data of this app and restart it again and keep visiting the album and or foto widget.
Cheers,

One addition: the image files themselfs display okay (if a use a file mananger and open arbitrary image files).
Settings > apps > album > clear data > uninstall updates > restart the phone > wait few minutes > remove the nonmedia files too.

Followed your instructions without success so far.
a) how long could it take to recreate database and thumbnails? The main picture directory (DCIM on the SD card) contains almost 1000 pictures).
b) Where should the .thumbnails directory reside? Should it -- after switiching to the SD -- be in /storage/sdcard1/DCIM or still in /storage/sdcard0/DCIM as it was before the installation of the SD card?
c) How can I either force the media scanner to run and update the foto widget pictures and album database or see/verify that it does run.
Thanks again.
