Creator Mode broken?

Creator Mode broken?

I can't become friends with Creator Mode. It looks wrong to me.

Having worked in broadcast for quite some time, developed test patterns for television, and being a videophile for over 30 years, I can't convince myself there isn't something fishy going on in Creator Mode that wasn't meant to.

Saturated colors, for instance in the home screen, are too muted in Creator Mode. Not merely desaturated, but less luminous than they ought to be. Some colors even look sickly. It certainly does not look anything like the $50,000 Trimaster monitors it's claimed to mimic.

It's as if sRGB is remapped incorrectly into the display gamut when Creator Mode is on.

Works well for me. I'm used to fine tune every screen I have and I just set the white balance to Red 70, Green 26 and Blue 0 since it's too blueish by default. Still better than standard mode that really hurts the eyes with the flashy blue and green colors. But it looks like it's the trend for now since every new phone I tried was calibrated this way, less natural, more eye catchy.

Well, that is just my perception of the screen, you can read some review that talk about the screen calibration like the anandtech one in english, or a bunch of other one in different language. They use profesionnal sensors to do their tests and gve some basic setting to work with. Of course, each screen is slitghly different.

The color saturation is also off. Testing it with color bars (100/0/100/0 and 100/0/75/0) across both video (in BT.709) and stills (sRGB), there is some undersaturation in Creator Mode. In Standard Mode, the colors feel slightly oversaturated.

It certainly doesn't feel like something the CineAlta/TRIMASTER people would have contributed, but rather a problem with color space conversion. Color is a bit duller than it should be, and this is when comparing it to calibrated displays (both pro and consumer).

I'm going to test the white point at work if I get a chance to see if I can get the temperature closer to D65, because both Warm and Medium seem to be well off that target. But tweaking the white balance doesn't help the strange color in Creator Mode.

Indeed colors in Creator mode are so washed out that the screen looks like cheapest LCD from the past.

Just don't use it == issue fixed.

They should bring back vivid mode instead and remove Creator mode since it's useless at this stage.

I haven't measured the screen yet, but tried adjusting the white balance by eye to match the white balance to which I've calibrated my TV. Neither is truly D65, but at least the phone is now in the vicinity of 6500K, whereas before it was probably still at 8000-9000K.

The tweak resulted in R 128; G 72; B 0, a more aggressive adjustment than I'd done before. The color looks far more accurate now.

Hopefully saturated colors won't clip too bad in HDR.

With the Android 10 update, it seems they broke not only Creator Mode but the entire CMS. Sometimes when restarting the phone, the colors and gamma are completely off making the screen unbearable to watch (perversely oversaturated color), necessitating multiple restarts before the freaking CMS activates.

I think this is KuSony's own software additions and Android fighting again (just like the adaptive brightness did on past Xperias). But no matter whose fault it is, it needs to be fixed.
