SONY STR-DN1080 Chromecast issues due to Chromecast Built-in software version

The STR-DN1080 AV receiver Chromecast capability is slowly disappearing with many apps now unable to stream to it due to the fact Sony has NOT incorporated the latest Chromecast Built-in software update (currently at 1.47.xxxx) making it incompatible with current apps. Sony is currently providing 1.21.xxx version Chromecast Built-in software which is very much out of date into their most recent firmware update. The issue has been confirmed by both Google and TIDAL technical support.

The resolution to the problem is for Sony to incorporate the latest Chromecast Built-in software which is provided to them by Google into a firmware update which isn't a lot of work. This would go a long way to solving a lot of ***** off Sony customers who are livid with Sony's poor customer support and response to complaints about this very problem.

Pick up your game Sony, it's not like it's going to cost you money to solve this issue on products your sold unsuspecting customers - Google has already done the hard work on the software side, just provide it! ðŸ˜ž

Yes, doesn't help. Still having the issue, no answer from Sony. BS.

I managed to get a more stable spotify connection, don't know anymore how. But the casting issue remains.

I'll pass this on to my Sony contact just in case anything can be done about it.

So after a bit of searching I found this:

The M41.R.0516 update added support for Chromecast Audio v1.36
https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/support/audio-components-receivers-amplifiers/str-dn1080/download...

Also the latest Chromecast Audio is 1.42.172094

They may not be matching but it's not as detrimental as it sounds. On the other hand, could you list which apps are you failing to use for casting to the amp? Do other apps work?

Hi Win_88,

Thanks for your reply.

I tested it with google home and an app called 'radio belgium'. Doesn't work for either of them. Didn't find a working app yet.

Google home detects 'something'. But when I select the device, it says that a connection is not possible or the device is not found.

I'll check into it, would be nice if it works again, the FM tuner is filling in the gap now 😉

I have the same issue

Have you tried using Spotify or YouTube Music?

Hi Joe,

Spotify works fine, but with spotify connect, not through the casting device...

Google Home doesn't find the google cast module either, I did a factory reset just 2 weeks ago, no difference.

Hi Sony Support,

With the latest firmware M41.R.0518 for your STR-DN1080 you’ve shipped Chromecast Built-in at version 1.36, which is now over 3 years out of date. This causes serious audio-streaming issues from mobile devices—particularly with stereo FLAC files at 5762 kbps and 192 kHz—that play back erratically and suffer frequent dropouts due to an inadequate buffering strategy.

Example issues encountered:

  • FLAC files (2 channels, 5762 kbps, 192 kHz) → constant interruptions

  • Inability to fully enjoy high-resolution, lossless audio

  • Frustrating experience on recent smartphones (Android and iOS)

Request:
Please release a new firmware update for the integrated Chromecast Audio, upgrading it to at least version 1.56.281627, which includes numerous bug fixes and improvements over the very old 1.36 release. Google has already made this build available, so it shouldn’t require significant development work—and it would resolve the majority of customer complaints.

Thank you for your attention: delivering this update would fix a persistent malfunction and help restore confidence in your products.

Hi was having the same issue with Chromecast on the DN1080 however I believe I have found the oversight that is causing the issue as I now have casting working and wanted to leave the solution here for anyone else looking for it.

Go in to the DN1080's menu and select ::: Listen > Music Service List > Chromecast

You will get a popup asking you to accept new T&C's for its use, once agreed Chromecast appears to function correctly. I now have casting working from my Pixel and the chrome browser just fine direct to the DN1080 amp.

Hope this helps others out.

I believe that the service is disabled until agreement to the T&C's is done via that menu option.
