STR-DN850 not accepting 4K-signal input

I just bought the UPB-X800M2 and my TV is KD65AF8. Both support 4K display.

I then connect my STR-DN850 between the two devices (Blueray to HDMI-in and TV to HDMI-out) and play a UHD disc, but now the blueray player will not output the 4K signal, but scales down to Full-HD. The receiver then upscales to 4K.

According to the instructions, the STR-DN850 supports 4K signals. Why will the blueray player not output the 4K signal?

Which kind of UHD bluray movie are you trying to play? Being a 2014's model it may support 4K but surely not any HDR... I'd never use it in pass-trough mode nowadays. Your best configuration (if your player support it) should be an HDMI directly to the TV and the second (audio only) to the receiver. If your player doesn't have it, you should chose between video quality or audio quality (being that via arc from the tv you cannot send back to the receiver lossless tracks)

Thanks for the reply. I have already connected it as you suggest, as it also were suggested in the UBP-X800M2 manual for owners of non-4K receivers. The disc is Star Trek from 2016 with HDR. You might be right that the reason for the downscaling to Full-HD is the receiver not supporting HDR material, but I can't test this, as I will have hard time finding a UHD disc without HDR nowadays.

However, I have reason to believe that STR-DN850 does not support 4K input signal AT ALL! I found this note in the web manual for the receiver, in some obscure submenu deeply hidden:

"To enjoy 4K (HDMI BD/DVD, GAME, SAT/CATV, VIDEO1) images, connect a 4K-compatible TV or video device (Blu-ray Disc player, etc.) to the receiver using High Speed HDMI cables, and then play 4K-compatible content (for STR-DN1050 only)."

So here Sony states that only the STR-DN1050 is supporting 4K input signals. The STR-DN850 upscales Full-HD to 4K if the connected tv is 4K, but it just doesn't accept any 4K input - HDR or not.

This is my hypothesis, please do not hesitate to correct me if I'm wrong.

I also wrote to Sony support, but got a standard reply with a guide to factory-reset everything and checking software versions. I'm pretty sure it is not going to make any difference.

So I will have to cope with the setup as it is now, which is working fine, but still is a kind of "work around" in my opinion. A receiver should be able to pass through the native signal of any HDMI input. I guess I will have to buy the STR-DN1080 to obtain this.

That model was not sold in Italy so I do not have additional specification but looking in internet it may seem that it actually supports 4k passthrough but may not support HDCP 2.2 so this may prevent the player to output in 4k

In any case the solution can still be valid, you may want to update the receiver for other reasons
