Zina,
The firewall not automatically enabling at boot can be symptomatic of a virus/trojan on your system.
Let¿s hope that isn¿t the case, but which firewall are you using and the version?
If you are using Norton then in Options > Auto Protect you will shoud find a check box for "Start auto protect when windows srarts up"

you could add the firewall into the autostart.

how do you do that? i want the program that allows you to remove hardware safely loaded in my taskbar and to stay there.
Hope you don't mind me borrowing your thread Zina.

Lizzie,
The safely remove hardware icon should be there in the system tray by default. There is nothing in the start options or services tab of msconfig that covers this.
However Windows has a glitch, insomuch as although these processes are running they occasionally fail to appear.
One workaround, if it is not visible in the tray, is to log off and then log on again ¿ not very convenient but it usually works.
