OK, I managed to fix the problem to my 'Critical Shutdown error' (kernel-power), but my other question is...
How do I access the bios? I have tried f10, f2, and f1 during bootup, but nothing.
My thanks for your input.

Hi kriptikchicken,
Press the assist button when fully shut down. This will open Vaio Care Rescue mode – then F2 to enter BIOS setup.

I've tried pressing 'Assist' to access the Vaio Rescue Mode, but I still get the Vaio logo and circling dots that eventually adds the notification 'Preparing Automatic Repair'. I've also tried pressing F10 as the system starts up, but with a similar result, but this time just goes straight to 'Preparing Automati Repair'. Any other suggestions?
