I have a VGC-LA1 model that has been diagnosed with a NVIDIA graphics card burn out - I have heard that this is a known problem and would welcomesuggestions on the best way forward

Sony has acknowledged problems with the nVidia chip fitted in certain models. The VGC-LA1 is not one of these models.
Here's the list of Sony Vaio models affected:
VGN-FZ11x, VGN-FZ18x, VGN-FZ21x, VGN-FZ31x, VGN-FZ38x,
VGN-AR11x, VGN-AR21x, VGN-AR31x,
VGN-C1Zx, VGN-C2Zx,
VGC-LM1xx, VGC-LM2xx,
VGC-LT1xx, VGC-LT2xx.
I can only suggest that you contact one of Sony repair partners for an idea of repair cost. It will not be cheap as the chances are a new motherboard will be needed.
