I am no expert in this area. I have found it helps to think of the machine as a Television with a remote commander. The television, HDMI input, composite input and computer are almost totally separate. The remote commander lets you use the television and manage what is displayed on the monitor. The controls at the top of the remote commander seem limited to managinng recordings made from the TV. These recordings form another complete sub-world, not accessible by anything else.
I would love to know more about this as it is very frustrating at the moment!
