I recently bought the VGP-PRS2.
A worser docking station/port replicator I have not seen!
1.) This thing is completly plastic and dont have at all the robust feeling that the notebook itself has.
2.) It comes with almost nothing convinient that the notebook itself has. The only thing it adds is a few USB-ports, DVI and a (obsolete) parallell printerport.
3.) It doesn't even come with a power supply, you have to use your existing one. So you have to go down under your desk and get the one hooked up to the dockingstation
4.) It raises the hole laptop about an inch from the desk, so the keyboard moves up also. This makes typing a pain in the ass.
To sum it:
It is very overpriced.
It suffers for very poor design.
It feels very cheap (forget the robust Sony feeling)
It gives very small benefits.
My suggestion, use a DVI-VGA converter and a USB-hub.
Thanks for your opinion.
Sounds pretty awful:smileysad:
Yes I have to agree.. cost another £100 for an extra power supply...................... STEER CLEAR:smileycry:
Nice to see practical comments about the keyboard being raised, something Sony should really consider when making these DS'es
Even worse thing I noticed.
Hardware profiles can not be recognized, since it's a "port replicator" and not a "docking station", meaning the VGP-PRS2 isn't a specific hardware itself and Windows XP wont recognize when being docked or undocked.. So "bye-bye" docking profiles...
I'm having a hard time to believe it was Sony who designed it. No other serious notebook maker would make mistakes like this. This must have been outsourced to some crappy company..
If it was supposed to be like this, I'd expect it to cost $49.99 not $199.99
If I'm think right, then the thing for the new FS215Z is only a Port replicator too. (correct me if I'm wrong)
A lot of them are like that now Seb.
Yeah I see. But that's the wrong way. IMO
Because it's the cheap way. I would more prefer a VAIO with less specs, but with a higher compatibility, productivity and quality. At the moment, SONY seems to prefer quantity.
I wouldn't buy any VAIO at the moment. But I like my VAIO. So, I hope SONY will go back to the old rules.
Couldn't agree more.
