WinDVD 5 & Media Player stuttering............

Hey folks,

Have had a VGN-A397XP for a good few months now. It's my first laptop and is a total dream machine.

However, just last night I put a DVD in and suddenly my Intervideo WinDVD 5 (also same prob in Windows Media Player) is stuttering quite badly and so is the sound. It also seems like the ATi logo has appeared in the taskbar when it wasn't there before. More than a little confusing...To my untrained ear, it sounds like the DVD's are playing back at a slightly slower speed than normal, although I've checked the speed settings in WinDVD and all seems to be normal...:smileyconfused:

I had installed some plugin's (for my music sequencer as I'm a working musician) before the trouble started but have since uninstalled them all and the trouble persists.

I've defragged. I've checked all my video and sound settings. I've tried several different DVD's. It just hasn't stopped doing this.

The drive itself reads data discs with no problem. The sound and picture work fine on games (that don't involve discs).

I'm imagining that I've got to go to the trouble of getting the drive replaced which would be a fair inconvenience but obviously essential if nobody has any ideas....

Hope very much you can share your experiences with me.....

Ta

Welcome to Club Vaio,
It is most likely the system needs a good Tune-UpTuneUpUtilitiesTrial Also try Diskeeper Lite and remove any spyware with Ad Aware. It will take time to do all these third party software reccommendations but it is worth it. Also K-lite Codec Pack is a must.

Hi

Try going back to a previous point by going to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Restore, and go to before you installed the plugins.

If it works then it's obviously some intrusion (probably DirectX related).

Thanks to you both fella's...great to be part of a forum where you can get quality advice, quickly,

I went down the 'Kee-lo' line and went back to a restore point from a couple of days ago......worked like a charm. Phew..thank goodness!

Will also check out the 'Tune-Up untility' as well though....thanks for that TonyBeard. Have you used it?

Huge thanks again, as I was getting a bit worried

Tune Up Tony I have been called by the tipster GBS. It is a brilliant program which is a good investment and far superior to Norton System Works which is very memory hungry and slows the very system it is surposed to be speeding up. TuneUp is small and sorts out the registry, Memory useage, internet connectivity and repairs overall orphaned links and Active X runaways. However it was my hero, KeeLo, that put me onto Diskeeper Lite the priority program IMO. It is free but the full version (about US$30) resizes the Master Paging File so that your systems fragments less and therefore keeps it operating faster. You can do this without it but it is more precise. Ad Aware is by far the best spyware remover which spyware being another system speed killer. These programs I use and my system is lightning (except on CV grumble... bandwidth mumble... bloody mumble)
