I think you mean the star next on the notification bar right? Well that means you're in silent mode but with exceptions.  

Just press volume up key.

Like @Curnow1 says it sounds like your phone is set to priority mode.
Press the volume key once to increase the volume. Depending on your Android version you might also get a menu on the top of the screen where you'll can choose between Silent, Priority and Sound. Choose Sound and this star will disappear.
